Updates

Today I have completely my Andrew Goodwin theory.I have into detail and spoke in depth about his 6 different point he makes on music videos.Posting this on my blog along with pictures to go with the Kayne West featuring T-pain music video. 'Goodlife' I then next plan to.Post it on to my blog and check what is next on the checklist. This will be research about the director that directed the music video 'Dry your eyes'.Looking at  Wikipedia the style he goes for when directing and similar music videos the director may have directed.

Andrew Goodwin Six Point Approach

Andrew Goodwin says that music videos are links between visuals, the song and the artist. The relationships that are built within the video and the close-ups of the music artist that gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the videos attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intersexuality is often employed in humorous videos.
Good Life Music Video (Kayne West ft T-pain)

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
From this video ‘Good life’ we can see that there are numerous genre characteristics used throughout the video. One of the most obvious ones being hand gestures by the artist. This is used throughout to express more meaning to the narrative artist are explaining to us the audience. Hip Hop Gestures are usually used to refer to money or diamond. These are classic examples used within this music video, commonly used through most hip-hop videos.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
This whole video is based upon lyric visuals. The music artist purposely carefully mimes the lyrics of the song, the lyrics also appearing on the screen,in various shapes, fonts and colours.Giving of the same fast, colourful engertic pase as the song.

Another relation made is with the lyric 'Now throw your hands up in the sky'At this point the artist is illustrations that is a interpreted from the lyrics of the song and then projected into the music video.

Good Life Lyrics-Kayne West ft T-Pain
Like we always do at this time
I go for mine, I gots to shine
Now throw your hands up in the sky
I go for mine, I gots to shine
Now throw your hands up in the sky

I'ma get on this TV, mama
I'ma, I'ma put shit down
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, I'm good

Welcome to the good life
Where niggaz that sell D
Won't even get pulled over in they new V
The good life, let's go on a livin' spree
Shit, they say the best things in life are free

The good life, it feel like Atlanta
It feel like L.A., it feel like Miami
It feel like N.Y., summertime Chi, ahh
Now throw your hands up in the sky

So I roll through good
Y'all pop the trunk, I pop the hood, Ferrari
And she got the goods
And she got that ass, I got to look, sorry

Yo, it's got to be 'cause I'm seasoned
Haters give me them salty looks, Lowry's
50 told me go 'head switch the style up
And if they hate then let 'em hate
And watch the money pile up, the good life

Now I, I go for mine, I got to shine
Now throw your hands up in the sky
Now I, I go for mine, I got to shine
Now throw your hands up in the sky

I'ma get on this TV mama
I'ma, I'ma put shit down
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, I'm good

Welcome to the good life
Where we like the girls who ain't on TV
'Cause they got more ass than the models
The good life, so keep it comin' with them bottles
Till she feel boozed like she bombed at

The good life, it feel like Houston
It feel like Philly, it feel like D.C.
It feel like VA or the Bay or Ye
Ayy, this is the good life

Welcome to the good life
Homie, tell me what's good
Why I only got a problem when you in the hood?
Welcome to the good life
Like I'm new in the hood, the only thin' I wish?
I wish a nigga would

Welcome to the good life
He probably think he could, but, but
I don't think he should
Welcome to the good life
50 told me go 'head switch the style up
And if they hate then let 'em hate
And watch the money pile up, the good life

Now I, I go for mine, I got to shine
Now throw your hands up in the sky
Now I, I go for mine, I got to shine
Now throw your hands up in the sky

Hey, I'ma get on this TV mama
I'ma, I'ma put shit down
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, I'm good

Have you ever popped champagne on a plane
While gettin' some brain?
Whipped it out, she said, "I never seen snakes on a plane"
Whether you broke or rich you gotta get biz
Havin' money's the everythin' that havin' it is

I was splurgin' on trizz, but when I get my car back
Activated, I'm back to Vegas 'cause
I always had a passion for flashin' before I had it
I close my eyes and imagine, the good life

Is the good life better than the life I live
When I thought that I was gonna go crazy?
And now my grandmama ain't the only girl callin' me baby

And if you feelin' me now then put your hands up in the sky
And let me hear you say hey, hey, hey
Ooh, I'm good.

There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
Within this video there are not many relations between the music and visuals. However the one I found was the repetitive beat.Which was used to  an advantage in the music video. The artist clicked and clapped to that beat, almost as if it was a sound of a clap. This being one of the ways music and visuals was used within this music video.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

The video ‘Goodlife’ is based upon a animated theme.A theme requently used be Kayne West as the the narrative they are telling is very self explantory. It illistruates a wide range of ideas, concepts and notions into the music video within Kayne West videos and album and single covers.

An advantage to the record companies as  advertising and promoting can take place, something that is very cleverly done thourghout this music video. The first being promoting Kanye West’s ‘Graduation’ album, using the bear from the front cover.as an animated factor to the video. The bear is a symbolism that is used in his most of his video and all of his albums.

A prop used was Sunglasses.A big fashion trend that R&B and Hip hop artist wear.Definietly a trend Kayne west is very well known for following. This also being  one of his personal  motif, that makes up on his representations. This explaining the several close up shots in the music video. The particulary sunglasses advertised in this Video is Louis Vuitton.A style that can easily be identiyfied as the style is quite distinctive.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
There is frequent  voyeuristic treatment referred to in this video.Through illstratuations, visuals and within the music video itself by having an attractive girl flirt and dancing and bending down in a low cut leotard and fishnetted tights.

The notions of looking at screens within screens is when the artists in the video turn into animated characters themselves.

The voyeuristic illustrations used to refer to women's physical assets are put in the lyrics. '

A picture of Michael Jackson. He was often referred to by other artists as living the 'good life' as he was well known for his extravagant style and expensive life style.
Welcome to the good life, where we like the girls who ain't on TV cause they got more ass than the models'

The Good life video used intextuals of the film ‘Snakes on a plane’ to make sexual refrence through. This was done through the lyrics.Have you ever popped champagne on a plane While gettin' some brain? Whipped it out, she said, "I never seen snakes on a plane"                                                                                             Then later on put into visuals through the video (Holding a champagne bottle in this hand whilst he pours out the lyrics out of the bottle)

There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos)
‘Where we like the girls who ain't on TV cause they got more ass than the models’

J&F is an old established company that specialises in old styled televisions. And this is what was used in the video, topping it off with the J&F logo at the side to give more of an effect to the narrative they were connoating to the audience.

Audience Research Video

Target Audience

Myself and another group member  Humayra  thought it would be a good idea  to create a video of our audience research.Asking 5 different questions on the type of music videos and type of music genre are focus group took an interest in.

Knowing this information will later on Help us to be aware of our target audience interests, enabling us to incorporate much of it into the our music video.

We Asked five different individuals.Male and females. To ensure we knew the interests of both sexes of our target audience.

(Upload video)

Target Audience Research

It was important to find a target audience research so I was aware of the interest our target audience asked. Also to see if I could include elements of the target audience interests into the music video.I firstly made a questionnaire with five short fixed questions.I conducted this through opportunity sampling of people in my media studies class. The people I targeted was aged between 16-18.
The reason for this sample of people was because it was very convenient and I was aware they took an interest in the questions I was asking, therefore the answers given would be more reliable than if I was to ask people I did not know. The questionnaire consisted of five media related questions.
The questions asked were.

Who is your favourite music artist?
What is your favourite type of music genre?
What is your favourite album cover and why?
What is your favourite music video?
From these questions I will be able to get gather an idea of the interest of these all around the same age,and if there was a difference or similar pattern between
the type of  music they liked and their favourite music video.

The results I got back showed that the people i asked had an interest in the music that is focused on with media eye and part of 'popular culture' The answers I received for the first question. All the music artist the target audience like were RNB and Hip Hop artist

The genre of music the target audience liked also feel hand in hand with the artist they liked. As well as their favourite albums. The album names they gave were usually albums from their favourite music artist they names in the first question.Their favourite music video also being the same.
Here is some evidence of the questionnaire I handed out for people to question on target audience.

The feedback I got from my target audience helped to shape the direction we could film. As most the individuals I asked took an interest in music genres that were more modern. So my group and I decided that it would be best to use something a music genre that we was very familiar with however a music artist from that same genre of music we did not listen to. As this would allow us to look into the music artist music from a blank slate as we had no knowledge of their work. This allowed us to form our own opinions about the artist and their music.

The music videos our target audience took an interest were modern. So this allowed my group and I to come to a conclusion of choosing a song that we thought was unique in the way the music video wad filmed, as we could use attributes of the music video within ours.

Genre

Early Pop was firstly gained from vocal harmonies frim gospel and soul music, Jazz, country, orchestration from classical music, dance music tempo and also elements of hip hop music. Pop music was dominated by the Americans. The British industries have made Pop music an international monoculture. But most countries and regions have taken on their own forms of pop music. By the early 1980’s the promotion of Pop music has been changed by the rise of music television channels like MTV. Favouring artists like Prince, Madonna and the great King of Pop. Michael Jackson.
1950’s – It was in the 1950’s when songs were put into the pop category and were  the style from the standard forms of music in the 1950’s.Usining more prominent vocals, mostly used for backing up string sections and vocal chorus.
1970’s- The main genre that influence pop was the genre ‘Disco’ and dance oriented styles, that used steady beats and syncopated electric bass lines.
1990’s – The nineties were the decade dedicated to female pop artistic. They had successful singles that clearly outnumbered male performers. Some examples being ‘Nothing compares 2 U’ (Sinead O’ Connor  1990) ‘Vogue’ (Madonna  1990) ‘Hero’ (Mariah Carey  1993) and “Wannabe” (The spice girls 1996)
This was when pop became truly international in the nineties with number 1 hits coming from diverse and distant locations.
2000 To the Present Day- Female singers has a big influence on the pop genre with soulful ballads, dance tracks. ‘Falling’ (Alicia keys 2001) Whenever Whatever (Shakira 2001) and ‘Umbrella’ (Rihanna  2007)
There is now an international appeal to the pop music and it was evident in the new millennium. Music artistic had a major influence on the type of pop music we listen to today.
Latin pop also being very successful with the songs in Spain ‘Hero’ (Enrique Iglesia 2002) Also Canada entering the charts. ‘That’s the way it is.’ British artistic also doing the same. ‘Feel’ (Robbie Williams 2003) and ‘You’re Beautiful’ (James Blunt 2005)
African Americans contributed to diverse styles of Pop. Some hits were more hip hop-based, such as "Yeah!" (Usher, 2004) and more variations on reggae beats ("It Wasn't Me" (Shaggy, 2000).

Weekly Updates

I will be looking into different types of music genre I could potentially use in my music video. What will help me make my decision to what genre to choose will be what music is popular into days charts. What type of people that I feel my music and music video will appeal to and a music video that will be realist to create. These are the factors I will have to think of when choosing a genre

I will next then go onto look at my target audience. I will do this by handing out questionnaire to in the audience i want my music video to appeal and attract people to my music video.Which will perhaps help to come up with potentially ideas we could use when filming the music video.

Visual Motifs

In interviews Michael Jackson said he was greatly influenced by late James Brown. Often as a young age he would watch performances by James Brown when he was dancing. Brown James is known for his unique foot movement. He continuously said that he was influenced by him, and where he learnt a lot his foot movements.
Michael Jackson’s motifs are his clothes. The shiny, eye catching gem stones and rhinestones he has put on to this custom made his socks, gloves and military jackets

His motifs are usually physical visuals that make up part of his representation. The era when he wore military jackets was when his music was going through a phase when he was engrossed when the army that he even put choreography of soldiers marching with guns behind him. Living up to his title of ‘The king of Pop’

Fashional Style

There are many things Michael Jackson is known for. Not only his phenomenal performances, unique dance moves and generous donations his given to numerous charities over the years. But for his extravagant dress sense. The gold plated military jacket he wore throughout the Bad era.

The one mysterious white glove worn when performing. His thick white sock he would wear with his black patent loafers to the white plasters he would wear across his fingers. Perhaps to compliment the white glove. The King of pop definitely did have a distinctive dress sense. One most definitely loved, admired and imitated by millions.

Michael Pop Genre

You would think the title ‘The King Pop’ would be enough to give away the genre of music and target audience he entertained. Evidently not. Michael Jackson was firmed placed in the genre of Pop music however why is it that millions that did not take a interest in that genre love him? He targeted and blew away artists that were in the same genre as him or that even attempted to come close to him. The Thriller album remaining in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 for more than one year and over 100 single Number 1’s worldwide.

Michael Jackson was an American recording artistic, singer-song writer, musician and dancer alongside many other things. He is known and recognised as the most entertainers of all times in the Guinness world records. He was the seventh child of the Jackson family. He began his professional music scene alongside his brothers as a member of the Jackson 5, and began his solo career in 1971.

Symbolism

Although Michael is well known for his unique dress sense .He has had many highlights throughout this life of his choice of clothes his worn to award shoes .His amazing dance move. Moon walk.
However one peculiar symbolism is the white plasters he wore around his fingers when not wearing his glove.

His called ‘The king of Pop’ and lived up to the title the best he could, even going as far as been photographed  wearing a crown and sitting on a throne and where a white faux fur cape, with a polo necked top designed with jewels and gems. Living up to the title as real king.

Military coats were something we also saw Michael Jackson wear. It became one of his many trademarks that made him.He wore them when performing, for interview.Anywhere.It made his representation and he was loved for it.

Media Representations

Michael Jackson has many media representations. Some good some bad. However let’s focus on the positive. Throughout the years he lived he was recognised for the numerous Grammy’s and awards he was rewarded for. Twenty-six American Music awards, forty Billboard awards, Seven Brit awards, thirteen Grammy’s, Twenty-seven Guinness world records, one MOBO award, another thirteen MTV awards, Four American Video Awards, thirteen World Music Awards and fifty-six RIAA Awards. Totalling up to a three-hundred and ninety-two awards. These being just the major awards he won throughout his career. From these awards alone the world let alone the media has recognised his great talent and greatly been rewarded for it. Through his number one single on the Billboard charts and his thriller album staying on the Billboard charts for more than three months.

Not to mention Michael Jackson being in the Guinness World Records for donating millions of dollars charity to help less fortunate children in developing countries. He also has numerous charities organisations opened up in his name 'Heal The World'

However there are less unfortunate times Michael Jackson had experience throughout his life. One is being accused for child molestation to 12 year old boy. However was found innocent in the court of law and the allocations against him were dismissed. These were one of the moments where he hit rock bottom. Another where the safety of his children were questioned as his behaviour towards them were see in the eyes of others as ‘not normal’ he would often cover his children’s faces with scarfs and carnival masks to hide their identities for the public.

A peculiar moment that aroused was when he held his new born baby over the hotel balcony to show chanting and screaming fans outside. This astonished fans and the media misinterpreted his actions and was made into a big palava.

On the other hand Michael Jackson is known for mostly well known for this the positive affect he had on the world, and was made up of many representations.

Music Video History

A music video is a short film integrating a song and imagery which is used for promotional or artistic purposes. Music video within this generation is primarily made for marketing and promoting the sale of music recording for an artistic.

The Australian TV show ‘Countdown’ played an important role as that is what first developed the music video industry. As music videos clips were used as a way of marketing acts that were to appear on a TV Show. This is how the popularity of video clips grew, making the music industry realised the marketing potential of music clips and found a way of using this to their advantage. Six years later the New Zealand group ‘Split Enz became of the first bands to create an entire set of music promo clip. MTV being the first nationwide video music programs on American television to play music Videos. MTV then began expanding .In 1983 the almost 14 minute long music video for Michael Jackson song ‘Thriller’ was released. Which still today is the world’s most successful and influential videos in music video history. Two of the most videos that are the most famous and most expensive music videos of all time are Michael and Janet Jackson “Scream” which $7 million to produce, and Madonna’s “Bedtime story” costing $5 million. Scream is still the most expensively music video ever made.
